In The Field: Tools of the High Country

Elk hunters live or die by their bugle setup. Build a kit around an external reed bugle tube backed by two or three diaphragm cow calls for convincing mews and location calls on the move.

The mountain punishes cheap gear. A load-bearing meat pack with a removable frame is non-negotiable once you kill one. Glass with a pair of 10x42 or 12x50 binoculars on a tripod, and step up to a spotting scope for picking bulls off distant ridges.
