In The Field: Tools of the Spring Woods

A turkey vest should leave room for three calls: a slate or glass pot call for soft yelps and purrs, a diaphragm mouth call for hands-free cutting, and a box call for the far-off locator yelp at first light.

Stage a strutter-and-hen decoy combo twenty yards off the setup to give a henned-up tom something to come fight for. A full-camo pattern vest with a drop seat and a low-magnification red-dot or 3x scope on your shotgun round out the kit.

Items above are widely available at Cabela’s and other major outdoor retailers.
