Crossbow Training

The fastest-growing archery discipline in North America. Everything from first-draw mechanics to scope tuning to state-by-state legality.

Crossbow Mechanics

🏹

The Crossbow System

Rail, trigger, latch, cams, cables, limbs. Understanding force curves, power strokes, and arrow acceleration.

📉

Draw Weight

75–200 lb draw weights. FPS implications. Why 350 FPS is enough for any game.

Kinetic Energy

KE = (Mass × Velocity²) / 450240. Minimums: 25 ft-lb deer, 60 ft-lb elk.

🎯

Arrow / Bolt Spine

Match bolt spine to draw weight. Over-spined = nock-high. Under-spined = accuracy loss.

🔧

Cocking Mechanisms

Rope cocker, crank, ACUdraw, Power Load. Consistent cocking = consistent accuracy.

🔒

Anti-Dry-Fire

Never, ever discharge without a bolt. ADF mechanism explained. Safety culture.

Accuracy Training

Rest and Platform

Crossbow shooting is a rifle stance. Bipod, shooting sticks, tree rest. No offhand shots past 25 yards.

Trigger Discipline

Crossbow triggers range 3–5 lb. Squeeze, don't pull. Follow-through until bolt leaves rail.

Breathing & Hold

Exhale halfway, hold, squeeze. Maximum hold time 6 seconds before muscle tremor.

Known-Distance Drills

Practice 20, 30, 40, 50 yards. 3-shot groups. Laser rangefinder mandatory past 30.

Cold-Shot Confidence

Your first arrow of the morning is the one on game. Practice cold shots, not warm groups.

Field Position Practice

Ground blind, treestand, kneeling. Shoot from where you hunt. Strap securely.

Scope & Sight Tuning

Zero Procedure

Most modern crossbow scopes have multi-dot reticles for 20/30/40/50 yards calibrated to specific FPS ranges.

  1. Mount and level scope on Picatinny rail. Use a bubble level — cant is accuracy's enemy.
  2. Set variable speed ring to your bolt/broadhead FPS (chrono-measured, not box-sticker).
  3. Bore-sight at 20 yards. Fire 3-shot group. Adjust windage/elevation to center.
  4. Verify at 30, 40, 50 yards. Fine-tune the speed ring, not the turrets.
  5. Re-confirm after every 10 shots or temperature change of 20°F+.

Draw Weight Considerations

Youth & Smaller Shooters

75–100 lb draw crossbows. ACUdraw-style cranks. Centerpoint Sniper Elite, Barnett Whitetail Jr.

Average Adult

125–175 lb draw. 350–400 FPS. Ravin R10, TenPoint Titan M1, Excalibur Micro Suppressor.

High-Performance

200 lb draw, 450+ FPS. Ravin R500, TenPoint Nitro 505. Requires crank cocker (always).

Adaptive / Mobility-Limited

Draw weight can be lowered without sacrificing effectiveness. 100 lb crossbow + ACUdraw is lethal at 40 yards.

State-by-State Legality

Always verify with state regulations before hunting. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
