The Story They Don't Tell You

In the early 1900s, wildlife in North America was on the brink of collapse. Market hunting, unregulated harvest, and habitat destruction had decimated populations. White-tailed deer numbered only 500,000. Wild turkeys? Nearly extinct at 30,000. Elk herds had vanished from most of their historic range.

Then something remarkable happened. Hunters stood up. They demanded regulations on themselves. They taxed their own equipment. They paid for licenses and stamps. They formed organizations and lobbied for wildlife.

The result? The greatest conservation success story in human history.

Milestones of Hunter-Led Conservation

1900

Lacey Act

First federal wildlife protection law, ending market hunting of game birds. Hunters lobbied for this law to stop commercial exploitation.

1934

Federal Duck Stamp Program

Waterfowl hunters agreed to purchase an annual stamp to fund wetland acquisition. Still the best conservation investment in America today.

1937

Pittman-Robertson Act

Hunters asked Congress to tax firearms and ammunition, with ALL proceeds going to wildlife conservation. This has generated over $14 billion for wildlife.

1973

National Wild Turkey Federation Founded

Turkey hunters created NWTF to restore wild turkey populations from 30,000 birds to nearly 7 million today.

1984

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Founded

Elk hunters created RMEF to protect elk habitat. They've conserved over 8 million acres.

1986

North American Waterfowl Management Plan

International agreement between US, Canada, and Mexico to protect waterfowl and wetlands across the continent.

Today

The Legacy Continues

Hunters continue to be the primary funders of wildlife conservation, contributing over $1 billion annually through license fees, excise taxes, and donations.

🏛️

The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation

The North American Model is unique in the world - a system where wildlife belongs to ALL citizens, not just the wealthy or landowners. This revolutionary approach has made our wildlife recovery possible.

1

Wildlife as Public Trust

Wildlife belongs to all citizens, managed by government for the benefit of present and future generations.

2

Elimination of Markets for Wildlife

Commercial sale of wildlife is prohibited, preventing exploitation and ensuring wildlife is never commoditized.

3

Democratic Rule of Law

Wildlife management decisions are made through open, democratic processes with public input.

4

Hunting Opportunity for All

Every citizen has the right to hunt and fish - not just the wealthy elite or landowners.

5

Non-Frivolous Use

Wildlife may only be taken for legitimate purposes: food, fur, and self-defense - never for waste.

6

International Resources

Migratory wildlife must be managed cooperatively across international boundaries.

7

Scientific Management

Wildlife management must be based on the best available science, not politics or emotion.

"The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation has achieved the greatest conservation successes in human history - and it was built by hunters."
